Week 10/1: Chapter 3 Question 1

Sally Ride exemplifies a good critical thinker by challenging herself, setting goals, being open-minded and being creative. From how her friends describe her, Ride seems to be a rational person who thinks before she acts and finds the reason behind things before acting upon them. She used her “research and inquiry skills” by thinking of her interests and communication skills and then decided to double-major in English and Physics. She also challenged herself by applying for NASA to become an astronaut. She did not have to be an astronaut to use her skills but she grabbed the opportunity. She also seems to set goals like the job, the report for NASA, and writing children’s books. She is curious too for taking on different activities. She also exemplifies “creative problem solving” by setting up the Sally Ride Science camps; this shows that she is willing to take risks and challenges and also shows her taking action to spark interest in science for girls.

  1. Hello Louise Arrieta,
I really like how Sally Ride was able to identify what she wants to do. Then, she sets different strategies to help her on approaching the goals. I think she is interesting because she double majored in English and Physics, where the two subjects are completely different with the other. I think the two majors helped her to develop her critical thinker skills: she had to exercise problem solving skills on Physics topics; written and analytical skills when she was working on her English assignment. Now, she is still exercising her communication skills by writing books and helping youth to improve their communication skills. I think she has an interesting life.

    Take care,
    Adrian

  2. I agree with you that Sally Ride exemplifies a good critical thinking because of those four qualities that are challenging herself, setting goals, being open minded and being creative. There are of course many qualities of the critical thinker but I like how you focused your attention to specific qualities. I think for a critical thinker one of the most important qualities you should have is great communication skills because without good communication you cant really get anywhere and it is critical to have that. Sally Ride fits all of the qualities that are mentioned in this chapter in the book and proves herself to be a great critical thinker.

  3. I can agree with no more of your sentence “she used her research and inquiry skills by thinking of her interests and communication skills and then decided to double-major in English and Physics”. I think interest is one of the major reasons that she chose to apply for NASA too. By all of her skills, she is more than capable of doing the job of astronaut. On the other hand, she also had a great talent for critical thinking skill while she was a child according to the page. I admire her insistency on completing her goal, and also the way how she spread out her critical skills by taking action.
